I think I need to give up alcohol. It makes me feel very ill.
I never learned to socialise sober though. My friends all still drink a lot and I feel terribly shy without it. I think I need to change but don’t know how.
For a start you do not need alcohol to have a good time. Just because your friends drink it does not mean you have to. Alcohol should be relied on for socialising as if you drank too much and became overconfident you could become susceptible to all sorts of terrible things. Things that you will regret.
You may be shocked to know that 1 in 13 of the British population is dependent on alcohol (they cannot get through the day without a drink), and 1 in 4 adults in the UK drinks too much (Alcohol Concern).Apart from the health issues arising from prolonged, heavy drinking (heart disease, strokes, cancers, brain and nerve damage, organ damage), you need only turn the pages of your daily newspaper to be reminded that alcohol can create all sorts of other problems. Alcohol is a drug; the more you drink, the more tolerant your body becomes to its effects. You need to be aware of how alcohol can start to control you, and eventually take over your life. Some people can control their drinking, while others can’t, and they become addicted to the drug alcohol. No one wants or plans to get dependent on alcohol. Act now before days of meaning to make changes turn into weeks, or even years. There are no easy answers, but making changes can help you regain control of your drinking and your life. You need to want to stop drinking, for yourself. Are you fed up with feeling ill, low, and tired? Has life lost its zing? Your energy and interest in other things is low and has been replaced with a preoccupation with alcohol. You used to feel drinking helped you cope. Now, you feel drinking heavily is causing more problems. There are many things you can do to stop drinking. You can tell your friends NO! When trying to socialise just try to start a conversation or something like that. Giving up alcohol must be made priority number one in your life. A partial commitment is a commitment to failure. Even if you already don’t drink that often, it will be tempting to break your own rules when your friends call you up and invite you out. You’ve got to be willing to prioritise this decision in every situation where it’s relevant, even when that means Just Saying No to pub night. The most effective way forward is to not only make quitting drinking a top priority, but to think, talk, and act like it can be done.Alcohol may be so tightly integrated into your social life that it seems almost impossible to go an entire weekend without drinking. If the only thing you have in common with your friends is that you like the same lagers, you might want to consider finding new friends. I hope this has been of some use!
Good Luck!
My boyfriend has a massive drinking problem at 21.. I’m really scared for him and he wants to give it up too but he doesn’t know how. I want to help as much as I can but what can I do?
He’s been to counselling before and it didn’t help him much, what’s the best way I can help?
The fact that your boyfriend wants to give up and that you are willing to support him is a good first step. Unfortunately, like any physical problem, psychological problems like addiction, often need professional help to address. Counselling is great as part of a long term support support plan, but is rarely enough to help someone with an alcohol addiction stop drinking – your boyfriend needs to get some more intense professional support to start with – best place for this is in a clinic where he is safe and supported round the clock by people who knows what he is going through. You can also get support from the clinic so you can help him when he has finished a rehab programme.
I know it sounds frightening, but rehab is the most effective way to get well – do some research into a appropriate clinics and find one that’s good for him. There are lots of good websites and people to chat to – check out http://www.steps2rehab.com/alcohol-dependency/ for a start…
Good luck getting your boyfriend some help…lucky he has got you to support him. If he gets the right help he can sort out his drinking problem and have a better quality of life…
as i have put on weight cos when i drink i eat rubbish and feel lethargic all the time anyone else overcoe this? also so much of my social life is based around drinking! how do i change this?
If you feel that you are an alcoholic, join Alcoholics Anonymous.
I’ve been diagnosed with an alcohol-induced liver disorder and have been told in no uncertain terms by my doctor that if I want to live for any length of time, I must stop drinking completely.
You must find a way, one that will work for you. Talk to your doctor, talk to rehabs, talk to AA, talk to a counselor, talk to anyone and everyone to figure out what could work for you.
I had cirrhosis from an autoimmune disease and had to get a transplant. While waiting, I had to go to the transplant clinic often. While there, I talked to many non practicing alcoholics either waiting or trying to get transplants due to alcohol killing their liver. Some made it, some didn’t. They require an alcoholic remain sober for at least 6 months before they will even consider them for a transplant. During that time, and if accepted after that 6 months, the person is required to take random drug/alcohol testing anytime they ask. If they test dirty, then they are immediately removed from the list to receive a transplant. Some people don’t have 6 months left to live and some can’t remain sober. Those people will die. You never want to wait till your cirrhosis progresses to the point of needing a transplant. Your doctor is right. Now you have to be the one to figure out how and what works for you.
This is my second cycle TTC and I am looking at ways to improve my fertility. How many of you gave up all drinking when TTC ? Do you think it helped you conceive sooner or did it not really make a difference ? Thanks for your imput.
Some say light to moderate drinking can improve fertility in some people, because the alcohol can thin the cervical mucus in those with thickened mucus. It’s also causes people to relax which is why it’s so often abused. combining those two things it’s no wonder so many people get pregnant after a night of drinking. I however, don’t drink at all, I just don’t think it’s a healthy part of my lifestyle so I cut it all out years ago and I’m glad I did. I think it makes me feel better and in turn feeling better may make you more fertile. Just my “thought”.
Ok so my friend is a softball player on a state national team in australia recently he has gotten the feeling that drinking no matter how little or less often you do it will ultimately effect his performance I was just wondering how much the occasional drink could actually harm him?
I’m a college student and it’s not practical for me to give up alcohol completely. Does anyone have any diet tips that don’t require a complete abandonment of alcohol?
is that waht’s causing your overweight? if you have alcochol pegged as your main cause of weight gain , then you ought to examine this. but maybe even so you coudl just reduce your alcohol intake and not give it up completely.
.
but of course what is more practical is lots of good exercise such as running. trust me, if you run 3 miles per day , you can have those 2 margaritas from pedros and lose a few pounds also. Contrary to popular belief, walking does not burn sufficient calories for weight loss.
Also again about the alcohol – its interesting that you say that college students can not in practicality give up alcohol. that’s interesting because i’m a college student and I have decided to do just that
good luck
i am 20 years old and getting drunk every weekend is what i do. but since moving into my own flat ive started drinking during the week, the amount im drinking has made me put weight on and my skin really bad. i just think giving up alcohol is going to be hard seeing as my mates want to go out every weekend and i dont know how to say no.
Change your routine and plan different activities to do on a weekend.Go swimming,to the gym or any sport that keeps you active and improves your health and encourages you to get fit.
Help, i cannot control it. i like to drink but if i drink i need smoke. so how can i stop alcohol ? i have a some side effect of kidneys due to alcohol.
Hey mate:
When it comes to addiction or bad habits, if you may, you cannot suddenly get rid of it. That is not recommended and is not practical; because at some point in time when you are pressured or stressed, you’ll find yourself indulging in that same bad habit again. In other words, it has to be a gradual process. However, if you are a strong minded and very determined, in that case, a sudden avoidance of such activities will work.
As for the moving on part, even if you manage to stay committed, you’ll still need a new set of habits to counter the bad and old ones. For instance, you might join a running club, painting class, photography, or even volunteering, which is my least favorite. While volunteering, you sometimes find cases and instances that will call on your old bad habits. It is best to do something that is highly outdoor and something that you’ve always wanted to do. That new habit is your gateway to diverge away from the smoking and drinking. I wish ye the best of luck, mate. If anything, simply post another question.
Hi i’m a 19 year old girl from the UK, and every weekend I go out to a club with my friends and have a LOT to drink.
I don’t always get drunk depending on what I’ve eaten, however there have been a few times when I’ve blacked out, though I don’t go that crazy anymore.
I eat healthy all week, and have no caffiene or fizzy throughout the week, but when Friday comes I drink about 2 or 3 bottles of wine during the whole night. I love wine and see this as my treat.
How bad is this for my health??
I’m wondering if I should cut back?
PS: Don’t preach to me about being an alcoholic, as I’m not and never would be, I live with an alcoholic for 17 years, and would know when to stop things if they ever went that far.
lol, i have the same problem, just with vodka and clear drinks like that. I usually get drunk about 2-3 times a week
